Becoming a trader

Becoming a trader is not as easy as it sounds. In addition to the initial capital that you need to trade with, to become a trader you need to have a trading strategy that works. This is where most traders fail. They either don't have a trading strategy – relying instead on instinct, intuition, gut feeling – or they have a trading strategy, but the strategy breaks even at best instead of racking up real profits. Some traders even go so far as buying systems from others - this is sheer madness! Do you really think that you can buy a system (often a basic "EA" - expert advisor - software programme) that will turn you into a millionaire for just $99? or for just 1,000€?

The idea of being a trader is indeed an appealing one. In theory, all you have to do is buy low, sell high, and once you get the hang of it, you just place a couple trades a day (or week) and you count your profits at the end of the month. In addition, you don't have to drive to work anymore, in fact, you don't even have to get out of bed anymore. No suit and tie, no boss, no schedule, no meetings, no rat race (even if you win the rat race, you're still a rat!).

Becoming a trader is a wonderful experience. It's even better if you can take a shortcut and be given the tools, avoiding the painful learning curve that most traders inevitably encounter (large losses, margin calls, market surprises, etc.).
